Guide
How to type faster
Nine habits that raise words per minute without wrecking accuracy — in the order they actually pay off.
1. Anchor on the home row
Index fingers on F and J, thumbs on the space bar. Every reach starts and returns here. Until your hands snap back automatically, speed has nowhere to build from.
2. Stop looking at the keyboard
Looking down caps most people around 35 WPM because your eyes have to leave the text and find their place again. The first week feels slower; every week after is faster.
3. Fix accuracy before speed
Drop your pace by 10-15% until errors fall under 3%. Each mistake costs about two keystrokes of time to notice and fix, so accuracy is the cheapest WPM you will ever buy.
4. Read one or two words ahead
Your fingers follow your eyes. Skilled typists are always reading slightly ahead of what they are typing, which removes the stop-start rhythm that eats seconds.
5. Drill your weak keys, not the whole alphabet
Most people lose the same handful of keys over and over — usually the outer fingers on Q, P, Z and semicolon. Target those instead of retyping words you already own.
6. Keep wrists floating
Resting wrists on the desk forces the fingers to stretch. Float them slightly, elbows near 90 degrees, screen at eye level.
7. Practise in short daily blocks
Ten focused minutes a day beats a weekly hour. Muscle memory consolidates between sessions, not during them.
8. Type real sentences, not just word lists
Punctuation, capitals and rhythm are where speed collapses in real work. Mix sentence drills into every session.
9. Retest weekly, not hourly
Daily scores are mostly noise from sleep, caffeine and mood. Compare one timed run per week at the same time of day.
Put it into practice
Set a baseline with the 1 minute typing test, drill weak keys on touch typing practice, then check your error rate on the typing accuracy test a week later.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to type faster?
Most people gain 10-20 WPM within four to six weeks of ten-minute daily practice, provided they touch type rather than hunt and peck.
How do I improve typing speed and accuracy at the same time?
You do not — you alternate. Practise at a pace where accuracy sits above 97%, then push speed until errors appear, then settle back. Repeating that cycle raises both over time.
Do typing games actually help?
Yes, when they force the same movements as real typing. Games mainly help by making you practise more often, which is the variable that matters most.
What is the fastest realistic typing speed?
Professional typists sustain 90-120 WPM. Competitive records exceed 200 WPM, but those require years of deliberate practice and are not a useful target.
