What your first score means

Beginners usually land between 15 and 30 WPM, and hunt-and-peck typists rarely pass 35 WPM no matter how hard they push. That ceiling is why touch typing is worth the two weeks it takes to learn.

Do not chase speed on day one. Get your fingers on the home row, keep accuracy above 95%, and the speed follows on its own within a few weeks of short daily sessions.

Next: how to type faster, the average typing speed chart or touch typing practice.

Frequently asked questions

How fast should a beginner type?

15-30 WPM is a normal starting point. Reaching 40 WPM within a month of daily ten-minute practice is a realistic goal.

Should I look at the keyboard?

Try not to. Looking down caps your speed permanently. It feels slower for the first week and faster forever after.

How often should I practise?

Ten focused minutes a day beats an hour once a week. Consistency builds the muscle memory, not volume.
